Govt Takeover of Internet – UPDATE

Commie statue of liberty

Just the other day, Glenn Beck said, “I fear this government, this administration has so much framework already prepared, that they will seize power overnight before anybody even gives it a second thought.”

It is happening.

Today, news comes about a Senate bill, introduced on April 1st this year by elitist Jay Rockfeller. It is S 773, the Cybersecurity Act of 2009, which gives Obama the authority, in the name of an alleged national cybersecurity crisis, to seize the Internet and disconnect private computers from the Web.

S.773 is described as follows:

A bill to ensure the continued free flow of commerce within the United States and with its global trading partners through secure cyber communications, to provide for the continued development and exploitation of the Internet and intranet communications for such purposes, to provide for the development of a cadre of information technology specialists to improve and maintain effective cybersecurity defenses against disruption, and for other purposes.

Bill Allows Obama to Seize Internet in Crisis

August 28, 2009 – http://www.newsmax.com/insidecover/obama_seize_internet_bill/2009/08/28/253692.html

A U.S. Senate bill that envisions a government seizure of the Internet – literally disconnecting private sector computers from the Web – during a national “cybersecurity crisis” has sparked alarm among civil libertarians and web companies.

The bill, first obtained and reported on by CNET,.says that the president would be able to declare “a cybersecurity emergency” relating to “non-governmental” computer networks and do what’s necessary to respond to the threat.

Other sections of the bill, which is authored by U.S Sen. Jay Rockefeller, a West Virginia Democrat, include a federal certification program for “cybersecurity professionals,” and a requirement that certain computer systems and networks in the private sector be managed by people who have been awarded that license.

“I think the redraft, while improved, remains troubling due to its vagueness,” said Larry Clinton, president of the Internet Security Alliance, told CNET. “It is unclear what authority Sen. Rockefeller thinks is necessary over the private sector. Unless this is clarified, we cannot properly analyze, let alone support the bill.”

Rockefeller has declined to comment on the record, but representatives of other large Internet and telecommunications companies expressed concerns after a teleconference briefing with Rockefeller’s aides this week.

A Senate source familiar with the bill told CNET that the president’s power to take control of portions of the Internet is similar to what President Bush did when grounding all aircraft on Sept. 11, 2001. The source said that one primary concern was the electrical grid, and what would happen if it were attacked from a broadband connection.

When Rockefeller, the chairman of the Senate Commerce committee, and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) introduced the original bill in April, they claimed it was vital to protect national cybersecurity. “We must protect our critical infrastructure at all costs–from our water to our electricity, to banking, traffic lights and electronic health records,” Rockefeller said.

Eowyn,

Does this piece of crap legislation have a number or identifying marker so we can look it up on the internet and read it?

I’ve been stuck on my couch for two days (elevating my knee) so I had some time to read through this!

The Secretary of Commerce shall provide assistance for the creation and support of Regional Cybersecurity Centers What do you know, creation of more government jobs.

And yet while countries like China have been quick to recognize this change, for the last eight years we have been dragging our feet.’ Scary to think he implies cyber security of China is what we should emulate. We all know what that means…(plus they slam Bush)

The Director of the National Science Foundation shall establish a Federal Cyber Scholarship-for-Service program to recruit and train the next generation of Federal information technology workers and security managers. Going after our kids to indoctrinate them and make them work for the government…

While this all may not sound too threatening, anything that comes from this administration cannot be a good thing. I’m dubious…
