Mark Sanford & Profound Tom

25 06 2009

This may be one my stranger postings, then again it may not. This is a twofer posting. You’ll see.

Eating_Crow_edited

When the news broke that the Governor of SC had gone missing, I knew instinctively that either a bad joke had been played, or the media had been played. Then the story changed. The second version had me taking the ball of my hand and hitting myself in the forehead while saying “is that what everyone is upset about”? I just couldn’t get over the media being upset over a Governor wanting to go hiking by himself, it simply seemed petty.

As the day wore on, I read all manner of articles and listened to all manner of pundits on TV. The questions and the comments being made, especially by the Dems, were not making any sense to the trained eye and ear of a political junky like myself. One of the comments even made me roll my eyes. Remember when someone brought this up… “Why would he secretly go hiking on the Appalachian trail, on Fathers Day, and on National Hike Nude day”? The following day I woke to even more news concerning the SC Gov. Speculation was more like it, News is usually considered somewhat accurate. By the end of that day I had had enough, it was time for me to speak out (like anyone cares what I say). And, I had the foresight and stupidity to post my displeasure at http://giovanniworld.wordpress.com/2009/06/23/7720/. Smart move right? Huh, we all know how that turned out! Now I feel like Tom, one of our more recent posters(see Profound Tom below).

The next time something like this comes up I’m going to listen to that little angel in my head that warns me not to step in doo-doo. In the meantime you will find me off by myself somewhere eating a good heaping of Crow!!!

Profound Tom

Tom has only been a poster here at Giovanni’s World for a short time, but in the short time he has been here, he has added to the collective intelligence quotient of this site by a few more points. This profound statement below by Tom puts into perspective how many of us are feeling right now. Two thumbs-up!

“Thanks a lot guys, you have successfully taken the spotlight off of obama’s train wreck of socialism and put it on the fact that you can’t keep your johnson in your pants!”

By Tom

The next time we have the opposition on the ropes, we need to find a way to keep the Republicans from throwing in the towel.

It’s just a distraction!

Carbon Tax and Trade, Universal Health care, illegal immigrant amnesty, deficit spending…

dscott,

You are correct. But why the hell did it have to be a supposed good guy?

P.S. You gotta admit though, Profound Tom got it right.

You know the BTK serial killer was a member of a church and at one time President of the Lutheran organization. Bad people use the cover of the public’s blind spot to hide their character flaws.

Sanford allowed his self importance to overshadow character. So what drives a person who is constantly in the public light to sneak around under the delusion they won’t be found out.

That he at least had the decency to admit his problem whereas Clinton denied the obvious. However, his confession was after getting caught and not thinking of any way to cover it up.

Yes, kudos to Tom for seeing this for what it actually is, a diversion from the real issues. Ironic, liberals love to make a big issue out of a moral failing of a conservative or libertarian (in this case) and conservatives make a big issue out of failing liberal policies.

Sort of reminds me of an old saying…. “Being a Democrat means never having to say you’re sorry”.

Gio,

You’re being too hard on yourself. Your first reactions were motivated by our well-justified suspicion about the MSM.

Just your bad luck that in, as our DCG (Debbie) put it, “the POS” Sanford’s case, the MSM actually sniffed out a real scandal.

I don’t think the MSM sniffed anything out, actually. If Gio doesn’t mind, I’ll repost my thoughts on the subject from elsewhere:

Here’s a thought that doesn’t rely on the intra-party power struggle theory: Cap-and-trade is going up for a vote, and the “elderly and very sick aren’t worth treating” unhealth bill is going to be next in line for the WH rush. That in mind, this whole debacle is a very convenient hammer with which to bash conservative opponents and herd Republicans farther away from their base on two massively important bills in the immediate and very near futures. At the very least, Dems get to deride Reps on the national stage at the same time, which doesn’t hurt Obama’s push.

We already know that at least one news group was aware of the scandal but kept it under wraps for months. Is it far-fetched to think that someone with a Dem agenda and knowledge of the scandal decided now would be a good time to play their cards and, in hopes of catching him red-handed, called in the press when they noticed the Gov dropping off the radar? I find it a bit hard to believe this was Sanford’s first trip to see his mistress given that the relationship has been going on for at least 6-7 months, and any news-hound/political-hack worth his salt would be keeping a close eye out to catch indiscretions after last December, no?

In the end, the dimwit brought this upon himself and, by extension, both the Right and Republicans in general, but the fact that the whole story got so much attention before it was even a real story (the whole “He’s missing so we must find him!” shtick when his staff knew where he was, for instance) seems a little off to me. In fact, it felt like someone who knew the whole story already was pushing to have it revealed now when they could have done so any other time. Sure, the idiot screwed up big by starting the affair and deciding to go play right before major (read: nation-defining) fights in Congress. His timing was abysmal in more ways than one. It still feels like a canned scandal ready to be opened up as soon as he decides to get some at a politically inopportune moment. Could this have been made a story even without his boneheaded trip? How about a question with the same answer: Is there a JournoList ready and willing to trumpet rumors, scandals, and rumors of scandals on orders from Dems?

Someone tipped off the media, and that is for certain. They don’t exactly hang around airports waiting to find people supposedly hiking in the Appalachians. Could it have been a disgruntled staffer or other Rep (with rather good sources inside Sanford’s staff, it would seem) looking to be rid of an opponent? Sure, but couldn’t it have been a canned story opened up by the Dems’ pet media to slime Reps and conservatives right before major policy battles? Just sayin’…

I forget if it was Boortz or Beck, but one of them had a caller today suggesting that this was made a big story to distract from ABC’s prObama hour, which was (rightfully) smacked down as stupid. Why bother having the infomercial only to distract viewers from it? The whole point was to sway the sheeple, not the critically-thinking folks who are less likely to get caught up in the scandal. However, if you look at it through my (conspiracy? :P ) theory’s lens, they could have expected the story to roll in faster than it did, and overshadowing the infomercial was simply collateral damage from a miscalculation, while the rest of the theory stands. Maybe I’m over thinking this thing, but politics is the one realm in which I maintain Hanlon’s Razor does not apply.

Our Governor Sanford has had a serious mental breakdown. The pressure placed on him by the Obama Communist White House to accept the “stimulus” money was more than this human being could handle. Even President/Dictator Hugo Chavez recently stated that Obama was more to the left than both he and Fidel Castro. I saw it on a Spanish TV station and it is the only time that I have agreed with anything that Chavez has said.
While the many righteous hypocrites are throwing stones at Governor Sanford, if we take a look in each of the critic’s own closets, we will probably find many, many skeletons. Starting with the Lieutenant Governor Andre Bauer – who, in my humble opinion, is to be blamed for the media frenzy. It has been said on local radio stations that Bauer himself blogged in the State paper about demanding a meeting with Governor Sanford this past Monday and being told by the Governor’s Staff that the Governor was not reachable because he had taken off to go hiking in the Appalachian Mountains. Bauer took the opportunity to write a blog alerting the entire world that the Governor was MIA and that his staff could not reach him. There are video clips showing Bauer, the opportunist, making a big deal about the Governor not being available. Thank you, tantrum-throwing Bauer for making us the butt of many jokes!! In my opinion, Bauer’s actions were beyond malicious. It is rumored that Bauer wants to run for Governor next year. Who wants a leader that cuts the throat of a fellow Republican in order to gain political power? Not I!!!
I heard an interview with the female reporter who was waiting at the Airport for the Governor to arrive from an international flight from Argentina. According to what I heard on the radio, she had been either been tipped off or she had heard rumors that he would be returning from said foreign country. Apparently many in our capitol knew about the affair.
I personally don’t care about Governor Sanford’s relationship with his wife or his mistress, I am more interested on how he governs. He is one of the few politicians who had the “cojones” to fight for what he thought was right when it came to making decisions for our beautiful state and its people. I agree 100% that the Governor’s actions were inappropriate and irresponsible as far as leaving his fiscal and fiduciary responsibilities and not handing over control to the second in command, which would be the Lieutenant Governor. However, in my opinion, Bauer should not have been an opportunist and notified the media about the situation. In my opinion Bauer seems to be a politician hungry for more power and he apparently took advantage of the Governor during a fragile and weak moment.
It is a shame to see the media feeding frenzy of such a good leader and the destruction of such a powerhouse as was our Governor. I can only hope that he re-emerges as a stronger man and a more determined leader. Unlike Congressman Frank, our Governor was not running, as it has been alleged, a male prostitution business out of his home. He has not been charged with corruption or bribery or money laundering – he is being accused of committing a very stupid mistake.
If God can forgive Governor Sanford for his stupid human mistakes, I can sure forgive him as well. We are all human and we are all sinners.
Governor Sanford – may the force be with you!!

I agree that Bauer is a lousy choice for Gov on this scandal alone, but it was Sanford that slit his own throat.
